2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe

The Jeep Wrangler Plug-In Hybrid is the 4th Best Selling EV in America.
And, the most sold PHEV overall in 2023. Even though I am not a “Jeep Guy”, I love it.

Many of my readers and viewers know that I have a good relationship with Hyundai dealer here in Albany, Oregon. They also own Albany Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and in March 2024, invited me to check out the Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrid while I was working on my own Jeep project

As a concept, Jeep managed to maintain its signature ruggedness while also making strides toward a more daily-driver-friendly experience in the most current generation of the Wrangler. For the most part, my experience with Wranglers has left me feeling like they’re fantastic off-road vehicles but too rough for daily use. The off-road hardware underneath, while impressive, often compromises the smoothness and comfort you’d want for day-to-day driving. Yet, this latest iteration surprised me. Jeep’s kept signature features like the fold-down windshield and disconnecting sway bars yet feels a lot more like a solid daily driver.

The Plug-In Hybrid Version: A Quirky Mix of Jeep and Efficiency

The Wrangler I reviewed was the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model, which, I’ll admit, felt like an unusual concept for a Wrangler. Jeep’s decision to offer both a plug-in hybrid and a fire-breathing V8 Wrangler 392 in the same lineup (which sounds great!) is awesome to me. You can go from eco-friendly silence to V8 growls depending on your preference.

Now, some hardcore Wrangler fans might scoff at the PHEV, saying it doesn’t have the same torque or sheer capability as the V8 or trusty V6, but the numbers are impressive on paper at least: 270 horsepower and 279 pound-feet of torque.

EV Range and Practicality

The plug-in hybrid Wrangler has a very modest 21 miles of electric-only range. Admittedly, that’s not much, but it’s often enough for daily commutes (the average commute in America is around 27 miles). The gasoline engine extends the total range to 370 miles, making it perfect for overland adventures. What’s even cooler is the ability to tackle particularly challenging off-road sections in EV mode. Imagine crawling over boulders or cruising through trails in near silence!

My Final Thoughts

In my review video, I cover some basic interior and exterior features of the Wrangler PHEV. While it’s not a vehicle I see myself owning—I’m fascinated by how many people are buying these. It’s a testament to Jeep’s ability to adapt to changing market demands while staying true to their brand.

The Wrangler PHEV might not be for everyone, but it serves a unique purpose in Jeep’s lineup. For those who want a Wrangler with a touch of extra practicality, this might just be the perfect fit. And for those of you who love the classic V8—don’t worry, Jeep’s got you covered, too.

Key Takeaways

  • Jeep Staying True to Its Roots
Jeep stays on brand with this most recent iteration of the Wrangler by preserving iconic features like the fold-down windshield and offering a variety of configurable trim levels and engine options, allowing buyers to tailor the Wrangler to their specific needs and preferences.

  • America’s Best-Selling Plug-In Hybrid
It’s both surprising and delightful that the Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the best-selling plug-in hybrid in America. With its rugged charm and hybrid versatility, it feels uniquely American—a modern take on the adventurous spirit Jeep embodies.

  • 21 Miles of Electric Range: A Strategic Advantage
While 21 miles of EV range might not seem like much, it offers unique benefits, such as the ability to off-road in silence—a feature that feels both novel and practical for those rugged adventures. The combined system horsepower ensures the Wrangler has more than enough power to tackle almost anything its owners might throw at it.
